About Maple Wood

Maple wood is grown on the Maple tree which belongs to a family of trees known as Aceraceae.  The size of the maple tree is dependent on the species of the maple wood.  There are 128 different species of maple wood and out of these 54 are faced with extinction due to the destruction of their natural habitat. Maple wood is distinguishable by its brown bark which is rough in older maples and smooth in younger ones. Its leaves can be divided in 3 to 9 lobes and are oppositely arranged on the branches. Instruments such as violins, guitars and drums are often made out of this wood. This tree is also famous for its production of the beloved maple syrup. 40-50 gallons of tree sap are required to produce just one gallon of maple syrup! Maple syrup is rich in sugar but also contains traces of vitamins and minerals such as zinc and magnesium. The leaf of the maple tree is also featured on the Canadian flag.
